Dry leaves rustle beneath your feet as you wander Kyoto on a cool autumn night. A beautiful stranger asks for directions, then reaches for your arm. Where flesh should be, only bone remains. To honor this haunting yōkai, we finished straight bourbon whiskey with toasted Japanese Mizunara oak, creating a whiskey whose memory lingers long after the bottle is gone.
A Cryptid is a creature of lore and superstition like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. We have recognized 4 of these mythical beasts with one from the U.S., one from Japan, one from France, and one from Brazil showcasing indigenous woods from each region. Each label illustrates the elusive cryptid showcasing artwork from Orlando’s own Fiorel Art. These are our lab experiemnts that turned out great so we thought it would be fun to release these to the public in small offerings as an example of how a single stave expression can influence a whiskey.
Holt & Capen Blend of 7 and 8 year high-rye Bourbon (40% Green River / 60% MGP – Both 21% Rye mashbills)

Cask Strength Whiskey finished in Mizunara Staves (Old Growth Japanese Oak)
Japanese Mizunara Oak offers unique flavors not found in American White Oak barrels. Making the whiskey taste creamy with rich toffee and sweet vanilla with a light accent of baking spices. These trees are harvest at a minimum of 150 years old which provides a tight grain formation on the wood but also adds structure and nuanced aromatics.
